Character Information:
Name: Enjolras
Canon: Les Miserables, novel by Victor Hugo
Canon Point: Moments before his execution, holding hands with Grantaire
Age: Early-Mid twenties, appears younger.
Type of Character: canon character
Reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enjolras http://lesmiserables.wikia.com/wiki/Enjolras
Setting Concepts: The setting is Paris France in the 1832. There are food shortages in France and many people are hungry, and the quality of life is very poor. In addition, the people in power are doing very little to help the living conditions of most of the population, and taxes are crippling. It is known that rebellion is in the air, and police surveillance is high. People are not allowed to gather in a group of more than 20. To work around that, students and workers meet in small group and then the leaders of those groups meet. Enjolras is the leader of his group. That group call themselves “Les Amis D’LBC”/The friends of the ABC. This group is his family and he feels deep love and loyalty towards them. Like most of the young men that make up the group, Enjolras is a student. It’s not stated directly, but it can be inferred that he is most studying law. Nothing is stated of his background, except that he is from the south of France and he is the only son of a rich family. In July 1832, a popular leader believed to be the only leader who supports the poor in France died. On the day of his funeral, Enjolras, les Amis, and others used the public mourning as an opportunity to stage their rebellion. The barricades only last a short time before they are taken by the French national guard. The Enjolras and the members of his band do not survive the conflict.
Personality: Enjolras is unyielding and uncompromising when it comes to his principals. Ultimately, he wouldn’t be so passionate about justice and ending the suffering of his fellow man if he wasn’t motivated by compassion. He also shows great love for his friends and great gratitude to those who fight with him at the barricades. The fact that he does not want men who have children or who have elderly parents who depend on them to fight with him also displays his sensitivity when it comes to the suffering of others. Ironically, his passion for these issues can often make him single-minded and aloof, and he is capable of treating the feelings of others as trivial when compared to the rebellion, and judging them when their feelings distract them from the cause. He’s occasionally described as “aloof” or “Haughty.” His single-mindness also makes him oblivious to when his blunt and frank nature causes him to unintentionally hurt the feelings of others, as with Grantare. He is an optimist and has no doubt that his rebellion will be successful and bring about an era of peace and an end to poverty in France. When it’s clear that the rebellion will be defeated, he continues to have faith that their deaths will inspire others to complete what they started. He is willing to die and he is willing to kill, but he takes no pleasure in it. It’s a means to an end, and he regrets every death, both those in his group and those who he fights against. He’s shown mourning the death of an artillery man that their side is forced to kill in order to delay the loading of a canon that would have destroyed that barricade. He also shows tactical ability as leader of the barricade. That and his studying law points to him being quite intelligent.
Appearance: Hugo describes Enjolras as remarkably beautiful. He’s tall, slim, with blonde hair, blue eyes, and fair skin. If I say in a post, that he looks beautiful, it’s because his canon does. There is a very long list of movie Enjolras’, and an even longer list of musical stage ones. I have chosen Aaron Tveit from the musical movie.
Abilities: Enjolras has the physical abilities of a human male in his early 20s who is in good physical health and has no physical or cognitive challenges. He has no special abilities, but he has an aptitude for public speaking and can be very charismatic and persuasive. He also is intelligent, with an ability to lead a group into battle and build at combat strategy. He’s comfortable taking risks and is very brave in the face of risking his life if he feels something is important.
Inventory: He has nothing but the clothes on his back.
Soul Gem: A gold man’s ring with a red stone. https://i.pinimg.com/originals/27/dd/34/27dd34197e459f157c159d4b7da14d96.jpg

2. Canon Character Information
Name: Enjolras
PB: Aaron Tviet (Enjolras in the film adaptation in the musical)
Journal: http://antinouswild.dreamwidth.org/
Age: 22 (stated canon he looks younger and could be mistaken for a teenager)
Appearance: If I describe Enjolras as beautiful in a post, isn’t not because I’m being a fangirl. Victor Hugo’s descriptions of Enjolras’ “Angelic” beauty are legendarily florid. But, Enjolras is very conspicuously beautiful by canon description. He has curling blond hair, fair skin, blue eyes, and a tall, slender build.
History: Unfortunately, while some of Hugo's characters have backgrounds, a majority of the secondary characters seem to pop into existence when Hugo introduces them. The only thing we know concretely about Enjolras' history is that he is from the south of France, and is the only son of a wealthy family. When the story finds him he is a student living in Paris and the leader of a small group of revolutionaries., Les Amis d'ABC. They meet in secret in the back room of the Cafe Mousain.
Enjolras' world seems to begin and end with this group of friends, and with his single minded goal of bringing about freedom from poverty and oppression that existed in France in the 1830s. Little else occupies his time and thoughts. In June of 1832 General Lamarque, one of the few champions of the people, dies. During his funeral procession, Enjolras and his group barricade the Rue St Denis in an effort to inspire the people of Paris to rise against Louis-Philippe. These efforts were unsuccessful and the rebels were dispatched and killed by the French National Guard.
When Enjolras is left the last man standing, Grantaire, who had no interest in the revolution outside of his fascination with Enjolras, took his place by his hero's side and the two died together, hand in hand.
Powers/Talents: Enjolras is a passionate and engaging public speaker, able to get followers to a cause. Other than that he has the normal abilities of a 22 year old healthy human male in good physical condition.
Personality: Enjorlas is a fiery and passionate soul, and his passion is human justice. It might then be a little ironic that he puts his involvement in this cause before personal relationships. He is fiercely loyal to his friends, but they are lieutenants and comrades in arms to him. Love and romance are nothing to him but something trivial that distracts people from things that are more important. And, when the people around him are involved in more frivolous activities, when something can be done to help the poor and the needy, and change the conditions people in France live in Enjolras can be impatient.
He does have great compassion for people who are suffering, and great hate for people who cause it. Injustice won’t be tolerated, and he will go to battle to protect someone. Just don’t try to cozy up to him afterwards. He’s about as cozy as a marble statue. And, if he thinks you’re an agent of oppression, he’s about as yielding as one.
Enjolras has a strong moral compass and a powerful sense of justice. He will always be just and fair. Killing is something that he will do in order to protect someone, or as part of revolution. Justice has even lead him to execute his own volunteers when an innocent bystander who had no part in the insurrection was killed. And, he will kill in order to protect his barricade and his men, and to continue the revolution. However, this is not something he ever does lightly. He is shown to mourn the people he killed, even when they died as part of a battle. He sees it as a necessary evil, but an evil nonetheless.
He will drink wine but never to excess or get drunk, and likes to talk politics. Should you have a differing opinion he will reprimand you and tell you that you’re wrong without any qualms. Politics is a subject he’s studied extensively and can speak about with a lot of knowledge. By nature he tends to be frank and candid in conversation. He can be aloof, disdainful, or just plain rude at times even if he doesn't really intend to be. In day to day actions he is serious, and tends to show little interest in frivolous pleasures or personal indulgences.
His morals are absolute and without compromise. Freedom and Liberty are good, and oppression is bad. If law makers are corrupt and make laws that keep people in poverty while keeping themselves rich, then laws can be overlooked. The rights of man are much more important. The ends often justify the means, even if the means are violent. His cause means more to him than his own life, and being a martyr doesn't bother him.
Enjolras is also a man of unyielding faith. He has an absolute absence of cynicism. Doubt that he and his friends will be successful in changing history never even occurred to him, and when the people did not rise and the barricade was taken, even then he knew that their fight would not be in vain, and that others would be successful in the future building off the groundwork that he and his friends laid. One might call him naive, or at least innocent. Enjorlas is intelligent, but not worldly. There is something about him that speaks of pure hope for and faith in a better future. And his innocence is one of the most beautiful things about him.
Why would your character be chosen? Enjorlas could be chosen for his devotion to his cause and his patriotism and love for his country. He could also be chosen for his bravery and his willingness to fight and die for his cause. Or, his compassion for people that drives him to fight for equality, and even feel for those he is forced to kill in battle.
How much does your character know about nonhumans? Nothing at all. He has faith and is a Christian, due to the location/time period of his life. But, he has no knowledge of non-humans.
Why this character: I love both his bravery and willingness to fight for his cause, but I also love his faith in a better future and his innocence. He’s a character I’ve loved since I read the book as a kid. P.S. Playing up his innocence for laughs with darker characters always turns out epic.

Citizens, I do not pretend to completely understand what has happened to us. This place we have found ourselves is still strange to me. Yet, I hope that we can work together in a spirit of unity and friendship to gain understanding of this place, and to find our way home.
The more of you I can speak to the happier I will be. If we can pool our knowledge together and stand as one, we all stand a better chance of finding our way to where we belong.
Who is with me, friends?
Third-Person: (Either a 200+ word entry or a link to a thread of 10 or more comments) Show us, don't tell, what your character is like in a prose writing sample.
The first thing Enjolras had noticed had been a lack of a hand in his. His companion was gone. At first, he had mistaken the strange transformation of his surroundings for death. It was the only thing that had made any sense. Yet, as the man spoke to him, the young man slowly realized that this was not the afterlife. This was something else completely. It was something he couldn't grasp or make sense of. Not even the stories in penny fictions had been so mad, at yet all he could do was stare at his hand, and realize that there was not another one in his.
He'd been assured that his room would be comfortable. Enjolras couldn't deny that it was. In fact, everything seemed far too perfect; the mattress on the bed seemed too uniform and exact, the paint and paper on the walls, if that's even what it was, was far too perfect to have been painted by a human hand. Even the cut of the materials seemed too exact. Something about it unnerved him, and he couldn't place it.
For a moment he decided to try to use the earpiece, but every time he tried to think of someone he wanted to speak to, the only people who came to mind were gone. He looked down at his hand again, and tried to fight tears.

Background: Hugo is vague about character backgrounds. The only thing we know about Enjolras’ life before he joins the story is that he is the only son of wealthy parents and he’s from the south of France. When we meet him, he’s leading a group known as “The Friends of the ABC” which is one of many groups mainly composed of workers and students that were plotting the failed revolution of 1832. In early June, Enjolras and his friends take to the streets and build a barricade on the Rue du St Denis. The barricade was taken and the insurgents killed. Enjolras was executed by firing squad when everyone else had been dispatched. He died hand in hand with Grantaire, a young man who had no interest in the revolution, but who loved and admired Enjolras.
Abilities: Enjolras is a rather astonishing public speaker, well-spoken, charismatic, intelligent, and handsome. Enjolras' beauty in the novel is described as being Angelic. Note: If I describe him as very beautiful in third person posts, it's not because I'm being a fangirl for him or his PB. It's because Victor Hugo described him that way.
First Person:
[The face is gaunt with pallid skin, his eyes are fever-bright with purple shadows under them, dry cracked lips and a wax-like sheen on his brow. One cheeks is bruised and swollen. Blonde curls are rough and tangled about his face. Yet in spite of it all, his features are beautifully and finely made.
He sits up in a bed and there clearly bandages around his chest and right shoulder. Some of them are bled through. For a long time the video is silent, as if he’s studying the camera, trying to understand it. Finally, he speaks.]
Citizens, hello. I am told that if I speak into this machine, others will see my face and hear my voice. Very well. [He presses his lips thoughtfully] I do not know why I was brought here. I’m not even sure where here is. But, I suppose that whatever reason God has for bringing me here will be learned in due time. I do not believe in random chance. So, that is what I intend to do, learn.
If anyone would like to tell me about this place, I will be in your debt.
Third Person:
Enjolras was dimly aware that there was not a hand in his. Weakly, he groped. The sense that something was very wrong pulled his senses back into order and he fought for consciousness. Slowly, the train car was pulled into focus. It was more an act of will than of strength that brought Enjolras to his feet.
He failed as he stood, holding onto the seat for a moment. He swayed as he managed to make his way from handhold to handhold, unaware of the trail of blood he left behind him. As he stumbled off the train, the ground met him. Once on all fours, he managed to crawl a few feet. The light was too bright now, but he managed to see the city in front of him. Choking on his breath, he sat back into his heels. This was not Paris. Even through the haze in his mind he could see that.
Then where was it? Heaven or hell, or something else completely. He looked down at his hands, empty hands. Where was the hand he had been holding when this had happened? The fact that he was alone now distressed him more than the blood did. His ears began to ring and the sun became brighter. He was only dimly aware of it as he slumped forward, and his cheek struck the concrete.

CHARACTER
Name: Enjolras
Canon: Les Miserables (Novel)
Age: 22/appears younger, could pass for a teenager
Timeline: Enjolras’ canon point is immediately after he is shot, and he will arrive with his wounds.
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: N/A
Personality: Enjorlas is a fiery and passionate soul, and his passion is human justice.

[Canon] Les Miserables (Victor Hugo's Novel)
[Point in time taken from canon] The moment of his death, when he stands in front of his firing squad and takes Grantaire's hand.
[Background] Unfortunately, while some of Hugo's characters have backgrounds, a majority of the secondary characters seem to pop into existence when Hugo introduces them.
[Personality]
Enjorlas is a fiery and passionate soul, and his passion is human justice. It might then be a little ironic that he puts his involvement in this cause before personal relationships. He is fiercely loyal to his friends, but they are lieutenants and comrades in arms to him. In day to day actions he is serious, and tends to show little interest in frivolous pleasures or personal indulgences.
His morals are absolute and without compromise. Freedom and Liberty are good, and oppression is bad. And his innocence is one of the most beautiful things about him.
[Abilities]
Enjolras has no superhuman powers that would be affected in Somarium. His strength, agility, durability etc. are what would be considered normal for a 22 year old healthy male who is physically fit. He is tall and described by Hugo as very beautiful. He is also a powerful public speaker, intelligent, educated, articulate and charismatic. Between being physically impressive and very well spoken, Enjolras is someone who can gather people to him and inspire them to follow him. However, this is all within natural human limitations.
[Other important stuff] According to Hugo, Enjolras is 22 but looks about 17 and reads younger than he is, making his well-spoken nature and intensity on politics and revolution a little more surprising and impressive to onlookers.
Enjorlas was never accepting of Grantaire, and was rude and disdainful to him. However, at my point in canon Enjorlas has seen Grantaire join him in front of the firing squad. He smiled and took Grantaire's hand. Grantaire proved himself to Enjolras in that moment, and Enjolras has accepted Grantaire as one of his group and one of his own.
Enjolras is a Victorian. He can, on occasion, have very Victorian attitudes towards things. I do not play 19th century characters with 21st century mindsets, so be prepared for some rather antiquated ideas. That being said for his time period Enjolras is progressive and educated, and he is intelligent so this should not be a major hindrance to him.

[First Person]
- What do you think of your home world?
France is like a wounded lioness, she is broken, she bleeds, and yet she is still magnificent. It is up to us, her children, to work to restore her to her former glory. For all of us who love her must be prepared to defend her so she may heal and be returned once more to her rightful role as a protector. And, it is not just France. It is for all men to help heal the wounds of tyranny that bleed beautiful and bountiful lands dry.
- If you were to describe yourself in one sentence, what would that be?
I am not afraid to fight and die to make my country great.
- Do you stand up against authority, go against all odds, and if you could, pierce the heavens with your fighting spirit? If not, would you if you could?
It is not for us to stand up to authority for the sake of it. Challenge without purpose is chaos. It is destructive. However, history has taught us that rulers only rule when the people allow it. France has taught us that. The problem is that people forget this, and sometimes both the rulers and the people they need to be reminded.
Going against the odds is nothing. What are odds when the rights of man hang in the balance? When such things are threatened odds are meaningless. So, I suppose the answer to the question is yes. I would, I could, and I did. It may seem to you that the odds were against me, you might even say that I failed. But as long as we are remembered, and people can speak our names, then myself and the others who went with me will not have died in vain.
- You're asked to take someone out for a date. Do you agree? If so, describe what you would do. If not, tell why.
First I must ask why anyone would make such a request of me. I cannot imagine why anyone would ask me to do such a thing, let alone consider such a request. No, I would not. Why? Because it would be frivolous and selfish of me to engage in such an activity when there are more important things to do. Do not make such requests of me. I'm busy.
- Murder. What is your opinion?
To take a life is an abomination. There is no getting around that. Sometimes it is required, and sometimes progress is paid for in blood. However, to say that it is justified is a mistake. It is not justified, it is only necessary.
- If you could destroy a city, how would you do it?
The best way to destroy a city is to make sure that people who hold the power care nothing for the people. No city can thrive that way. I have seen it with my own eyes, it is quite effective.
- There is a cake in the rain. What do you do?
... What? Aren't there starving people who need that cake?
[Third Person]
Enjolras turns up his collar against the rain and the cold. It rained the night they spent on the barricade too, but it had been warm and balmy. This seems to push through his jacket into his skin. Somewhere thunder rumbles, and it sounds to his ears like cannon fire. He closes his eyes and takes a breath, and the raindrops adhere his long fair lashes to his skin. Blinking them open again, he carries on.
He passes a home that looks empty. To find a building that, to him, looks inhabitable standing apparently vacant still strikes him as a waste. One would not see such things in Paris. He considers going inside, just until the rain stops. Just so he can find someplace warm and dry and quiet, to clear his head of thoughts of what has gone before.
He turns up the overgrown path and approaches the door when he sees it: a distinct smear of crimson on the window. Is it blood? If it is, is it human? With determination in his eye he walks up to the door without hesitation and pounds his fist against the wood. "Is anyone in there?" His voice reverberates over the porch through the rain.
Another blow of his fist and the wood frame cracks. Enjolras pulls the door off the hinges and throws himself inside, to the window where he saw the stain. The salt and copper smell of blood assaults him. He knows it and it cannot be mistaken. He winces as he sees the streak from the inside. It is more defined now, and the form of a hand print has become apparent.
He calls out again and listens for a reply, but none comes. He examines the house room by room. Even though he tries not to consider it, he finds the lack of a source more disturbing than finding one. There is no one in the home, no more gory traces, just the one hand print, that seems even more defined now as he returns to the front room.
The storm rages outside, but Enjolras does not stay in the house. He turns up his collar and goes back out into the storm. The storm was preferable to the familiar smell of blood.
[Why do you want to play this character in Somarium?] I've loved Enjolras for years. He's been a favorite fictional character since I was a young teenager. However, I've only started RP-ing him in the last year. Since I started I've had a wonderful time shuffling him around various communities, and I really liked the dream element to this one. I believe it will let me get into his head and I hope I can pull some interesting things out of it.
[Which rule was your favorite and why?] No Meta-Gaming. I am all for reminding people that just because YOU know something, doesn't mean your character does. And oh, it's not a rule but thank you for including the sample prompts. I had a lot of fun incorporating them.

[Where did you hear about Somarium?] Plurk
[Any questions?] No, thank you. :)

Oct. 8th, 2012 03:28 pmEnjolras' latent power awakened by the core, is the power to transfer his beliefs onto other people when he speaks about the passionately enough. He's a powerful public speaker as is, and is naturally both physically intimidating and incredibly charismatic. So, the effect is subtle. The line from being moved by his speech to being moved by his power will be blurry.
He can't force you to act against your will, and he cannot transfer a belief that he himself does not believe. However, his speech will go from moving and inspiring call to action, to a powerfully inspiring call to action that you will find it difficult not to answer.
The strength is relative to the strength with which he speaks and the strength of his own personal convictions. It will be easy to avoid and detect by people who have the ability to do so.
He's unaware of this power, and won't believe you if you try to tell him.
But perms if you don't mind being inspired and moved to be given here!

Abilities
Character's Canon Abilities: None
Conditional: If your character has no superhuman canon abilities, what dormant ability will you give them? Within his canon, Enjolras is a powerful public speaker. Charismatic and physically impressive, he is someone capable of making an impassioned speech that will rally the crowd behind him. His speech is described in the novel as “soaring” and “having the tremor of a hymn.” He also has complete faith in his cause, and his words.
In the port, this belief will be contagious and transferable. By making a passionate speech or a fervent plea or call to action, he can influence people to believe in him, follow him, and rally to his call to action.
It takes quite a bit of passion and fire for this ability to kick in, and will not effect people in everyday conversation. It won't be until he gets on a soap box and speaking with real fire that people will start to feel it.
The power of the influence will be directly proportionate to his own belief and his own passion on what he’s saying. For example, for him to walk up to someone and tell them “Oh no! Godzilla is behind you! Run away!” would be impossible, unless he himself believed Godzilla was present. He can’t make someone believe something he himself does not passionately believe. And, the more powerful his belief, the more powerful the effect.
The effect will make the speech more moving, more powerful, and more inspiring. It will not force people to do what he says. People will merely feel moved and inspired to rally to his cause, and help him achieve his goals. Enjolras has the ability to inspire even without any kind of supernatural power. So the effects will be subtle. The line between where his natural charisma ends and his ability begins will often be blurry, as the effect is not particularly strong, and is usually weak enough to be mistaken for his own personal magnetism.
The power is so subtle that Enjolras himself will not be aware of it. He is accustom to his speech effecting people, and likely won’t notice. But, anyone with any kind of ability to detect these kinds of powers will be able to realize that something is happening, and anyone with even the most minor ability to resist such things will be able to break the influence. If someone attempted to explain to Enjolras what he is doing, he likely wouldn’t believe them.
His ability holds the potential to make him a very useful individual, if developed. However, it would require a lot of discipline and practice to make it that strong on his part. And, he would have to first believe and accept that it was there. I do not think that he is likely to do that, and I have absolutely no plans to do something like that in game. In the unlikely event that plans change, all plotting and permission will be taken care of ahead of time so as not to influence anyone who does not want to be.
Even though his influence is fairly subtle, I will have a permission post up and respect it at all times.

History/Personality/Plans/etc.
Character History: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enjolras#Enjolras_in_the_novel Victor Hugo’s backstory on Enjolras is almost non-existent. The only thing we really know is that he is from a wealthy family. The events in the story are well outlined in the wiki, even though it is short.
Point in Canon: The point of canon is after Enjolras stood in front of the firing squad to be shot and took Grantaire’s hand, but before he is actually shot. He will arrive about to be executed, but not yet shot.
Conditional: Brief summary of previous RP history: N/A
Character Personality: Enjorlas is a fiery and passionate soul, and his passion is human justice. It might then be a little ironic that he puts his involvement in this cause before personal relationships. He is fiercely loyal to his friends, but they are lieutenants and comrades in arms to him. Love and romance are nothing to him but something trivial that distracts people from things that matter. And, when the people around him are involved in more frivolous activities, when something can be done to help the poor and the needy, Enjolras can be haughty and disdainful, even to the point of being rude.
He will drink wine but never to excess or get drunk, and likes to talk politics. Should you have a differing opinion he will reprimand you and tell you that you’re wrong without any qualms. Politics is a subject he’s studied extensively and can speak about with a lot of knowledge. He’s generally respectful and polite when politics aren’t involved, and closely observes manners and etiquette.
His cause means more to him than his own life, and being a martyr doesn’t bother him.
Conditional: Personality development in previous game: N/A
Character Plans: First, he will connect with his canon mates in the game. Adjusting to the port will be difficult for him, as will the destruction of his barricade and the death of his friends. Once he has emotionally stabilized, he will likely try to make himself an enemy of both Sero or AGI. However, if one of them got to him first he could be taken advantage of and used against the other.
Appearance/PB: Enjolras is described in his canon as angelically beautiful. He has a pale skin and curling blonde hair, and aristocratic-looking, well made features. His eyes are blue, and he’s tall and long-limbed. His clothes are practical and to his period. His played by is Aaron Tveit, from the upcoming motion picture of the musical. http://upandcomers.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/lesmis002.jpg on the left.

At any rate, the time has come for me to discover what I can about myself and my new surroundings. If I may glean some knowledge that I may take back to my own home, I shall not consider myself ill-used in any way. Consider me a pupil, kind people.
I have logging, and have been offered work. What employment I shall accept still remains to be seen. However, the food that has been left to me is far too much for one person. Third Person Sample To find heaven would be to find the place where all men are free, and live as equals.
[The phrase ran through his mind as he was about to die. Enjolras felt the world swim before his eyes, and he thought he understood. He truly did believe that he understood.
He collapsed onto all fours, feeling as though he were choking. He felt the bile rise from his empty stomach. As he finished coughing he realized, this wasn’t the floor of the wine shop. He felt earth and grass under his hands. It was dark, and the smell of rot and decay assaulted him.
He had thought he understood. Yet now, now nothing seemed to make sense.
Enjolras raised his left hand and pressed his palm to his chest. He found nothing, No wound, no red stain. No sign of any injury. Slowly he drew the breath into his lungs, and slowly, with control, he released it again. With a forced calm, he pulled his feet under him, and rose to his full height. It was with cool detachment that he let his gaze run over the field.]
